Francesco Mazzagatti’s CSR and Philanthropic Work: Supporting a Just Energy Transition

Philanthropic activities of Francesco Mazzagatti are closely linked with the sector in which he has developed his career: energy. His public work, supported by the 'SRM Foundation' (a UK registered charity founded under his vision), has been directed at climate action, biodiversity, education, research and the social issues around the transition to cleaner energy.
The SRM Foundation was established for a greater purpose than just the environment. Its mandate is to support the transition to a low-carbon economy, and to acknowledge the connection between social injustice and economic opportunity and climate change. It has charitable aims to conserve and restore natural environments, encourage the study of sustainability and clean energy, fund scientific research, and assist those who are financially disadvantaged or unemployed.
One of the key activities that the foundation has documented itself is the collaboration with Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Glasgow, Scotland. The partnership was announced at the launch of the SRM Foundation in 2024 and was aimed to help students from traditionally under-represented groups in higher education, to promote research and innovation and in line with the university's biodiversity and net-zero objectives. It also seeks to educate youth of the opportunities arising from the energy transition and to prepare them for future jobs.

The Waterside Farm biodiversity project is one of the key components of this partnership. The 55-acre location at RGU is being restored to provide a more diverse environment for plants and animals, such as wetlands and native species. The SRM Foundation has also donated £100,000 to the project, which has enabled RGU to create a long-term conservation and land-stewardship project. “It's in line with the foundation's biodiversity approach and the organization will attempt to measure the project's environmental benefits and impacts,” said Francesco Mazzagatti.
Education is another area where Mazzagatti's philanthropy is important. The foundation's collaboration with RGU is designed to enhance the research activities, but also to open doors for students and to increase awareness of the role of young people in a fair energy transition. Research and innovation at higher-education institutions is one of the primary areas the foundation has identified to support in the future.
The foundation's activities also cover Mazzagatti's ties to Vairo Energy as a whole. His interest in transitioning towards sustainability is rooted in his experience in the energy industry, according to SRM. The foundation does not differentiate philanthropy and work; instead, it works on topics close to heart for the energy sector's surrounding communities, workforce and environmental challenges.
In general, the CSR work that has been documented is focused on climate philanthropy, biodiversity conservation, education, research, and social justice. The SRM Foundation is the platform which reflects the main engine for these activities and in early work the University of Robert Gordon University is a tangible example of the application of his philanthropic vision to a project with environmental and social aims.
